Shimoda Marine Research Center, University of Tsukuba, JAPAN, is seeking for a faculty member in marine biology.

Shimoda Marine Research Center, University of Tsukuba, has established the Japanese Association for Marine Biology “JAMBIO”, in collaboration with University of Tokyo. JAMBIO is one of the “Joint Usage/ Research Centers” in Japan. The marine research center aims to accelerate advanced research in marine biology including international research collaboration. We are now seeking to recruit a faculty member who will develop own research by taking full advantages of the field and research facilities of the marine research center and will contribute to both the development of JAMBIO and the research/education in this academic field.

Position: Associate professor (1 position)

Terms of position: contracted for one academic year as one term with option for renewals

Research area: Marine Biology. Specific area; physiology, developmental biology or phylogeny/evolution of marine organisms at molecular and cellular levels

Requirement (Effort): 1) Research at Shimoda Marine Research Center in collaboration with the faculty members (50%), 2) Assistance partly in the management of JAMBIO (20%), 3) Teaching (30%); (a) Lecture “Marine Basic Biology” to undergraduate students for 10 days/ year in the main campus, (b) Practical training “Marine Post-Genomic Sciences” for 5 days/year to graduate students at the marine research center, (c) “Seminar on Marine Basic Biology A, B, C and D” to graduate students for 2 hours/ week at the marine research center.

Qualifications: 1) Ph.D. 2) Outstanding research achievements in marine biology and the relevant field. 3) Proven record in conducting Research and Education in English language environment (Japanese skill is not required).

Salary: 8,160,000 yen/ one year for associate professor. The travel cost for assignment to Shimoda and daily commutation cost are separately supplied. All the other cost, such as housing allowance, health and accidental death & disability insurances and salary tax, should be covered within above salary.

Research fund: 500,000 yen per year will be granted. The position is granted to apply for research fund such as to Grant-in-Aid from JSPS/MEXT and JST, Japan. The research staffs in the marine center will support from their grants in the case of research collaboration.

Starting date of employment: Jan 1, 2012 or later (negotiable)
