SMRC International Internship Program


The “SMRC International Internship Program in Marine Biology” (part of the Tsukuba Short-term Study Program, TSSP) is aimed at hosting international students for a short term research internship at the Shimoda Marine Research Center (SMRC) in the field of marine biology.

International students have the opportunity to undertake research under the supervision of educational staff at the Shimoda Marine Research Center. The list of staff and overview of their research is available here




Available Internships


Two internship positions are available each call. There are two calls each year.

Call 1

  •   Internship within April and May.
  •   Application deadline for this call is November 15th (23:59 JST)
  •   Accommodation in the dormitory (1000 JPY per night) is available (April and May only).

Call 2

  •   Internship within November, December and January.
  •   Application deadline for this call is June 15th (23:59 JST)
  •   Accommodation in the dormitory (1000 JPY per night) is available (November, December and January only).

Things to note

  •   Students are waived of bench and research fees.
  •   Food and accommodation at the Shimoda Marine Research Center are subsidised.
  •   No other fees are required but this program does not include a scholarship.

  •   Internship proposal and motivation letter, including :
    •   The intended period of internship
    •   The area of research
    •   Potential mentor
    •   Motivation for applying to the internship
  •   Application form (downloadable from here)
  •   Reference from current supervisor



Requirements

  •   Undergraduate or Graduate student
  •   All students are responsible for obtaining overseas travel insurance for a duration of stay in Japan
  •   Depending on the contents of the research: diving license and adequate insurance (DAN insurance)




Selection process


A shortlist will be made, with the selected candidates will be contacted for an online interview with the potential mentor.

The final selection will be announced in late December (Call 1) and late July (Call 2).
